(03-06 Apr 2014)

Our maid was Kubra and she was an older women but boy could she clean, and cook and be the boss of the house.  She picked up refrigerators and moved them with ease but she really could cook.  Her dishes were delicious.  She was also fearfully loyal.  One time my wife was sleeping and her girlfriend from Adana came and knocked on the door for a visit.  Kubra opened the door, the girlfriend asked for Sehnaz and Kubra told her she was sleeping.  When she told Kubra that she came all the way from Adana, that didn’t faze Kubra.  She told her to come back later and slammed the door in her face.  Sehnaz woke up and the girlfriend was admitted.

MG & Mrs. Anson were in Izmir when I arrived as a bachelor in 1982.  He was the Deputy Dommander of LandSoutheast.  We have many great travels together during our time in Izmir.  In January 1984 when I married Sehnaz in a Turkish wedding at the Izmir wedding house, he and his wife were there cheering us on.  He and his wife went over to Sehnaz’s mom’s house and met the family and asked that Sehnaz be allowed to marry me.  Thanks to this day they said yes.  During one of the travels we went to 3rd army headquarters and you can see the photos.  The Chief of Staff of the 3rd army was MG Hikmet Bayar.  Years later (1992-1993) I would be his aide-de-camp when 4-star General Bayar became commander of LandSoutheast.  Indeed a small world.

The photo of MG Anson and Sedat Guneral bears explanation.  When I arrived in Izmir, General Sedat Guneral was the Commander of LandSoutheast and MG Anson was his deputy.  After General Guneral retired he became the Secretary-General to President Kenan Evren in Ankara.  During General Anson’s farewell visit to Ankara we stopped in and said goodbye.

There are many wonderful memories from my first tour in Izmir in 1982-1984.  The Kordon Hotel, Sultan Inn, the bowling alley snack bar, the PX and commissary, Bayrakli park, and of course the host of friends made there.  There is a photo of General and Mrs. Anson in Ankara along with a couple of US Army officers.  One of them is Col. (now retired) Preston Hughes and his wife Anne.  He was the AFSOUTH Liaison Officer to the Turkish General Staff.  A wonderful couple and good friends to this day.  The other officer was Capt. (also now COL, retired) Mark Graham.  He was the first Army lawyer assigned to Izmir.  He and his wife are also good friends.

I retired in 1996 as a Major.

The photos are fairly self-explanatory.

Hope you enjoy

[Editor:  I received the following add-on from Dale on 12 Apr 2014.]

MG Anson retired from the Army in 1984 and moved back to Virginia.  He went to work for Vinnell Corporation in Saudi Arabia and then in 1988 brought VBR to Turkey as the services company for US forces stationed throughout Turkey.  He and his wife, Mary, live in Alexandria, Virginia.  I used to see them once a year when I would travel back to DC on business but have not seen them in a while.

[Editor:  VBR is Vinnell-Brown and Root, which is an Air Force contractor providing base maintenance support to three sites within the Republic of Turkey and one site within the Kingdom of Spain.  The company is a limited liability corporation with Northrop Grumman and Kellogg Brown & Root as partners.  The three sites in Turkey are Adana (İnçirlik), Ankara, and Izmir.  For information about VBR in Turkey, hiring opportunities, base amenities, etc., go here.]

[Editor:  Antikabir literally means "Memorial Tomb".  It is the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in Ankara.  The site is also the final resting place of Ismet Inönü, the second President of Turkey, who was interred there after he died in 1973.  His tomb faces the Atatürk Mausoleum, on the opposite side of the Ceremonial Ground.]
